Monroe Central’s JV baseball rallied from a 12-4 deficit Thursday night to defeat Southern Wells in the bottom of the 7th, 15-14.
Southern Wells jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, but the JV Bears came right back with 4 runs of their own. The Raiders added another 5-spot in the fourth inning and posted a 12-4 lead after four. MC scored two in the fifth to get within 12-6 and then erupted for 8 runs in the sixth to take a 14-12 lead.
The Raiders battled back to tie the game at 14-14 in the top of the 7th, but in the bottom half sophomore Tucker Young doubled and freshman Dustin Wright doubled him home for the victory.
Highlights included Nick Cox, Keith Friddle, Tucker Young, and Tyler Haney all contributing to the 4-run first inning. Down the stretch Cody Mieth had a 2-run double, Young had a 2-run double, Cox had an RBI triple and was hit twice, and Wright was 2-for-2.
Dalton Cooper and Friddle split pitching duties as many unearned runs crossed the plate.
Coach Ross Deckman said after the game, “the difference tonight was we threw strikes and made them hit the ball.”
The JV team is now 1-1 and will host Hagerstown Saturday following the varsity game at 10 a.m.
