Monroe Central’s varsity softball team swept county rival Winchester in a doubleheader Saturday. The first game was tight but the Lady Bears pulled out a 15-11 win in 8 innings. Faith Cope hurled a 3-hit shutout in game 2 as MC swept with a 10-0 win.
Game 1 saw the Lady Bears build a 3-1 after three innings, and MC added a 4-spot in the fourth to lead 7-1. Abreana Gaddis doubled to start the 4th, then pinch runner Laura Stoops scored on Jordyn Barga’s single. Mikaela McGrath walked, and Barga scored on a fielder’s choice by Ashleigh Comer. Faith Cope would then push Buis across the plate with a triple then scored on a wild pitch to give the Bears a 7-1 lead.
Winchester scored 6 times in the fifth to tie the game. Each team tacked on 3 runs over the next 2 innings before a 5-run explosion sent the Lady Bears to an extra inning win.
McGrath led off the 8th with a double and scored as Gaddis picked up her 3rd RBI of the game. Barga would get a base hit followed by hits from Adrianna Hardy and Cassi Buis who pushed Stoops across the plate. Comer would then lay down a sacrifice bunt to move Hardy to 3rd and Buis to 2nd. Cope then connected on a 2-run single.
Gaddis was 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI’s, while Cope was 3-for-4 with 3 runs, 3 RBI’s, a double and a triple. Barga was 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, McGrath had a 3-for-5 game with a double, 2 runs and 2 RBI’s. MC stole 6 bases in the game with McGratha and Cope each getting 2.
Barga was the winning pitcher throwing 7 2/3 innings allowing 10 hits, 4 earned runs, walking five and striking out 7.
Game 2 saw the Lady Bears lead 7-0 after three innings and cap off a 10-run rule win in the minimum 5 innings.
