Multiple Teams · Lady Bears win MEC opener over Wes-Del, 12-5


Monroe Central opened play in the Mid-Eastern Conference Monday night, and after falling behind 4-0, went on to defeat Wes-Del by a 12-5 count.

Wes-Del jumped on the Lady Bears for 4 runs in the opening inning, but junior Adrianna Hardy worked in relief and shutdown the Warrior attack the last 6 innings. Hardy allowed only three hits and one run in her 6 innings of work – no runs over the last 5 innings.

MC got 2 back in the bottom of the first when Faith Cope doubled and later scored on a hit from Samantha Roderick. Jocelyn Peckham would grab an RBI after her base hit pushed Roderick across the plate.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Lady Bears would belt out 7 hits from 11 batters scoring 6 times to take an 8-5 lead and never looked back. Ashleigh Comer led off with a double, Cassi Buis reached on an error and stole 2nd. Cope then had an RBI single, while Abreana Gaddis followed with a 3-run bomb. Roderick then doubled to right-center and scored on a single from Mikaela McGrath.  Jordyn Barga drove in McGrath with a single to right. Peckham then picked up her 2nd hit of the night to give MC an 8-5 lead.
In the 3rd, the Lady Bears would grab 2 more runs.  Buis and Cope both singled, then Roderick picked up another RBI on a base hit.  Laura Stoops, who was running for Gaddis, scored on a wild pitch extending the lead to 10-5. In the 4th with 2 outs, Comer picked up her 2nd double of the game and later scored on an RBI single from Lexi Paine. The scoring concluded in the 5th when Gaddis singled, and pinch runner Stoops later scored on a sacrifice fly from Barga.
The Lady Bears were led in hitting by Roderick who went 4-for-4 with 2 runs, 2 RBI’s and a double. Gaddis was 3-for-5 with 4 RBI’s including the 3-run home run.Cope was 3-for-4 with 3 runs, a double, and an RBI, and Comer was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 2 runs.
The Lady Bears (4-1) will travel to Class A 7th ranked Tri then host Class 2A 6th ranked Elwood on Wednesday.
