On back-to-back nights this week, Monroe Central’s honorable mention softball team faced powerhouse teams, who were both ranked in their respective polls.
On Tuesday, Class A 7th ranked Tri handed the Lady Bears a 17-6 defeat. Monroe Central jumped out to a 4-0 lead; however, coach Monte Gaddis said his “went flat” in falling to 4-2 on the year. Tri defeated Monroe Central 6-4 in last year’s sectional title game.
Wednesday night Monroe Central faced a pitcher from Elwood whom umpire Dan Chalfant described as the best pitcher he has witnessed all year.
Faith Cope had the Lady Bears only hit of the night as they fell to Class 2A 6th ranked Elwood, 7-0.
MC got off to a rough start as defensive miscues helped Elwood to a 3-0 first inning lead. The Lady Bears played pretty solid after that – and was complimented by home plate umpire Kevin Claxton for their defensive effort.
MC, now 4-3, is scheduled to host Shenandoah tonight at 5 p.m.
