Monroe Central’s JV baseball team walked a thin line Monday night, but held on to defeat Northeastern by a 5-4 count.
MC took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning as Nick Cox singled, stole second, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on Keith Friddle’s sacrifice fly.
Northeastern scored the next four runs over 3 innings, as the JV Bears made a myriad of errors totaling 7 for the game.
With the Knights up 4-1, Monroe Central erupted for 4 runs in the fifth inning. Cox led off the inning with a triple and scored on a passed ball. From there Friddle walked, Tyler Haney had an RBI double, Noah McCollum singled and stole second. Taft Manship walked picking up an RBI and an error led to run number five.
In the 6th inning, 3 straight walks set the Knights up for business, gut a 1-2-3 double play and a strikeout doused the threat.
In the 7th, used an error, a single and a walk to eventually load the bases with two outs. Cody Mieth recorded a strikeout to end the game and give MC the victory.
At the plate, Cox was 2-for-3 with 2 runs, Friddle was 1-for-1 with a run and an RBI, Haney was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI, Lane Lewis singled and stole a base, Jalen Hart had a base hit, and McCollum singled and scored.
On the bump, Haney started and earned the win allowing five hits, one earned run, and fanning four over five innings. Friddle worked a scoreless inning, and Mieth picked up the save in the 7th recording two strikeouts.
