Monroe Central’s baseball team hosted Class 3A Whitko Saturday at Ball State University. The results saw the Bears take game 1 by a score of 7-4, while the Wildcats held off MC in game 2, 12-6.
Senior pitcher Brayton Miller allowed a run in each of the first two innings and despite giving up 9 hits thru six innings held the Wildcats to only 2 runs. Whitko collected 2 singles to start the inning and picked up a 2-out triple before senior Tyler Bunner came on to get a strikeout and earn the save.
Miller struckout three in the game and only walked one.
At the plate, MC scored 4 times in the 3rd inning, Beau Combs walked and after Seth Wilson was hit by a pitch two errors put the Bears in business. Logan Conklin had a 2-run single, then for the 2nd time this year MC scored two runs on a squeeze play by Brady Jones.
In the 4th inning, a two out single by Combs with an error and passed ball mixed in led to run number five as Wilson connected on an RBI triple. It was a triple by Jones and a sacrifice fly by Wyatt Snyder that made it 6-2. Derek Goodman singled to open the 6th and pinch runner Nick Cox came around to score the 7th run.
Nakya Brown’s play at shortstop would have filled ESPN’s Top 10 play reel. Of the first 18 outs, Brown played a part in 13 of them. And that doesn’t include two diving stops he made that were not outs but may have erased extra base hits for the Wildcats.
Game 2 saw Whitko jump out in front on an error, a stolen base, and an error. MC came back and took a 2-1 lead Conklin’s single and stolen base, Jones’ RBI triple, and Casey Conatser’s RBI single.
Whitko scored the next 11 runs and led 12-2 after 4 1/2 innings. During that time Whitko collected 2 home runs over the BSU fence and 2 inside-the-park home runs.
MC extended the game on Cody Mieth’s triple and Combs’ RBI single in the 5th and in the 6th, a sacrifice fly by Snyder and 2-run single from Combs.
Combs threw 4 innings in the game, while Goodman threw the final. The 2 combined to allow 17 huts, 9 earned runs, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.
On the day, Combs was 4-for-7 with 2 runs, 3 RBI’s, and 4 stolen bases, while Conklin was 3-for-4 with 3 runs and 2 RBI’s, and Jones was 3-for-6 with 2 runs, 3 RBI’s, and a pair of triples.
Snyder was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s, Goodman 2-for-4 with a run, and Mieth 1-for-2 with a run and a triple. Brown doubled and Wilson tripled.
Whitko is now 17-5, while the Bears are now 12-8 and will travel to South Adams on Monday.
“It was great to be back at Ball State yesterday to play a doubleheader against a 17-5 Whitko team. While the field and stadium are much improved, being in the surroundings and in that ball park brought back many great memories of our playing days. (I am) glad we could share with our team,” said coach Keith Nunley. “Good competition will ready and has readied us for post season. Great experience for our team.”
