Multiple Teams · Bears hit, pitch, steal way to season opening win

Tucker Young and Tyler Haney retired the final 16 Centerville hitters in the game; Wyatt Snyder went yard; and Monroe Central stole 7 bases on their way to a 5-1 win over the Bulldogs in their 2017 opener.

Young, a junior, started and threw 5 solid innings. He gave up a double and single and walked two Centerville batters in the 2nd inning which led to the Bulldogs only run and only base runners of the night. Young finished with 6 strikeouts in earning the win.

Haney, a sophomore, faced only six batters in 2 innings and struckout the last four he faced to earn a save.

At the plate, senior Brady Jones opened the game with a single and a stolen base and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Seth Wilson reached on an error, stole two bases and scored on senior Logan Conklin’s groundout to give MC a 2-0 lead after one inning.

Junior Wyatt Snyder hit a towering home run to right on a 3-1 pitch to make it a 3-1 lead in the 4th inning.

In the 5th, senior Nick Cox walked and Jones singled for his 2nd hit in the game. Cox stole 3rd, then Wilson roped a 2-run single to make it 5-1.

The Bears 1-2 hitters, Jones and Wilson, reached base 4 out of 6 at-bats, scored 3 runs, and stole a combined 5 bases.

MC is scheduled to play at defending champion Daleville on Wednesday at 5 p.m. which is also the MEC opener for both schools.
