Multiple Teams · 5 runs in last at-bat puts Lady Bears in the ‘catbird seat’ for MEC title

Monroe Central’s Lady Bears scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning Monday night to defeat Wapahani, 6-5, and put themselves in the “catbird seat’ to take control of the Mid-Eastern Conference.

Sophomore Jordyn Barga got the victory on the mound and freshman Paige Willen led the Lady Bears offense reaching base safely 4 times and scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning on a wild pitch.

Both Wapahani and Monroe Central were undefeated in the Mid-Eastern Conference going into this game with the Raiders at 2-0 and MC at 3-0.
Wapahani held a 3-1 lead going into the 7th before adding a pair of runs on RBI doubles by Nuckols and Schuck.
Trailing 5-1 entering their final at-bat, Faith Cope had a 1-out walk then Samantha Roderick would get a base hit on a “wind aided” fly ball that would drop into the infield.  JoJo Peckham hit a rocket into centerfield scoring both Cope and Roderick to make it a 5-3 game.
Lauren Yates ran for Peckham, and scored on Barga’s RBI groundout to shortstop.
Now down to their final out and trailing 5-4, Cassi Buis walked and a pinch runner entered the game and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. Willen fought off a couple pitches on an 0-2 count and eventually walked. Mabrey Buis would then get hit by a pitch to load up the bases for the Lady Bears. Lexi Paine picked up the game-tying RBI as she was also hit by a pitch. A wild pitch sent Willen home with the winning run and putting MC in control of their own MEC destiny.
Wapahani had taken a 2-0 lead in the 2nd, while the Lady Bears got on the board when Barga walked. Courtesy runner Laura Stoops moved to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt by Cassi Buis and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Wapahani went up 3-1 in the 3rd and had a chance ro go up by more if not for the defensive play of the game by Faith Cope.
The Raiders were threatening in the 5th after a walk and a 2-out stolen base. On a base hit, Raiders tried to score from 2nd base, but Cope threw a bullet to catcher Jo Jo Peckham at home to end the threat
The Lady Bears (4-0, 6-6) play Wednesday at Winchester in the 1st game of the Randolph County Tourney against host Winchester.
MC will host Centerville on Thursday and Blue River on Friday.
