Junior Faith Cope threw a 2-hit shutout in the Randolph County semi-final game Friday night as Monroe Central defeated Union City, 12-0. Then sophomore Jordyn Barga went one better as she threw the school’s first perfect game in leading MC to a 6-0 title win over Randolph Southern under the lights at Winchester.
The title also came with 4 1st team All-County selections in Barga and Cope with Adrianna Hardy and Samantha Roderick. Lexi Paine was named honorable mention.
In the Championship game Barga’s perfect game included five strikeouts.
“The defense behind Barga was outstanding with 16 putouts and no errors to make the perfect game a reality,” said coach Monte Gaddis.
Cope got things started with a lead off single followed by a double from Samantha Roderick. Barga then helped her own cause picking up a 2-run double which ultimately would be all the Bears would need to win the championship.
The Lady Bears would threaten again in the bottom of the 3rd inning after Jocelyn Peckham singled and Barga got her 2nd double of the contest. But the threat would be shut down by the Rebels.
In the top of the 4th, the Rebels’ McDavid would hit a ball to right field that Ashleigh Comer would track down to keep the perfect game in tact.
In the 5th inning Barga would get three ground outs, two back to herself to shut the Rebels down for the 5th straight inning.
At the plate in the 5th, Peckham would get her 2nd single of the contest. Courtesy runner Lauren Yates eventually scored on a sacrifice bunt by Mabrey Buis putting the Lady Bears up 4-0.
Hardy collected her second hit of the contest in the bottom of the 6th, moved to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Cassi Buis and eventually scored on Cope’s double. Roderick reached on an error by the Rebels then stole 2nd. After a dropped 3rd strike with Peckham at bat to load the bases, Barga grounded out collecting her 3rd RBI of the game.
“With the perfect game looming, no one wanted to even whisper a word of it,” said Gaddis about entering the final inning.
Barga got the first Rebel batter to ground out. The 2nd hitter of the inning hit a shot into the left-centerfield gap but Faith Cope once again tracked it down saving the perfect game. Barga got the Rebels last batter to line out to Roderick at 3rd base, completing the perfect game for Barga and giving the Randolph County title to the Lady Bears.
Barga faced 21 Rebel batters striking out 5, getting 10 fly outs, and 6 ground outs to complete the first ever perfect game in Monroe Central Lady Bear History.
In the Semi-Finals game, the Lady Bears put up 17 hits scoring 12 runs and holding the Indians scoreless.
The Lady Bears high power offense was led by Cope with 2-doubles and a single, Mabrey Buis had three singles, Samantha Roderick had a double and a triple, Jocelyn Peckham had a single and a double, Jordyn Barga had a home run and a single, Paige Willen had 2 singles, Lexi Paine, Adrianna Hardy, and Lauren Yates all added singles.
