It has been quite a week for the Monroe Central softball program. The Lady Bears claimed the Randolph County title last weekend, had their first ever perfect game thrown, and on Monday wrapped up an undefeated MEC season and their first ever conference title.
The Monroe Central Lady Bears defeated the Union Rockets 14-3 as sophomore Jordyn Barga hurled a 3-hitter.
The Lady Bears were led offensively by Jocelyn Peckham reaching base safely 5 out of 5 times, and Faith Cope reaching base safely 4 out of 5 times. The Lady Bears powerful offense had 12 hits with 5 extra base hits.
Cope was hit in the head with the 1st pitch of the game and came around to give MC an early 1-0 lead. In the 2nd inning Adrianna Hardy got a 2 out walk and scored on a base hit from Cassi Buis, putting the Bears up 2-0.
In the 3rd inning, MC would put up another run after Peckham singled. Courtesy runner Lauren Yates stole both 2nd and 3rd base then crossed the plate on a hit from Mabrey Buis. In the bottom of the inning, the Rockets would make it interesting after a lead off walk by McNamara, which scored on a triple from Green. With the score at 3-1, Green would score on a ground out by Bickel bringing the score to 3-2 after 3 innings.
In the 4th inning the Lady Bears added 3 more runs when Lexi Paine was hit by a pitch and advanced on Adrianna Hardy’s sacrifice bunt. Cassi Buis reached 2nd on an error scoring Paine. Pinch runner Riley Manship got to 3rd on a wild pitch and after Cope walked and stole 2nd, scored on a wild pitch. Cope scored on a sacrifice fly by Samantha Roderick to put the Bears up 6-2.
The 6th inning produced 5 Bear runs starting with Cope’s single and RBI double from Roderick. After Peckham walked, Barga collected a 2-run single and Mabrey Buis drove in a run making it 11-2.
Eight batters went to the plate in the 7th inning, as Cope singled, stole second and Roderick walked. After a double steal, Peckham collected a 2-run double. Courtesy runner Lauren Yates scored on a double from Mabrey Buis making it a 14-3 game.
The now County and Conference champion Lady Bears imrpoved to 12-6 and are back in action tonight at Jay County, Wednesday at Muncie Central, and Friday at home against Blue River. MC will then travel to South Adams on Saturday for 2 games in their invitational.
