Girls Middle School Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · Lady Bears ‘get redemption’ in first ever semi-state appearance

Coach Ron Braun was quick to point out reasons for celebration to the Monroe Central girls’ cross country team upon arrival back at the team tent Saturday at the New Haven semi-state.

In speaking of the team’s lone senior Aubrey Norris, Braun said, “she was right there at the mile. She gave a hundred percent today.”

He also was quick to point a few team achievements as well. “We did two things we wanted. We got redemption – we beat Delta, who won the sectional, and Mt. Vernon who got us a year ago.”

It was the first time the Lady Bears had advanced to the semi-state as a team, while it was Norris’ fourth and final trip to the IPFW campus.

Norris capped her cross country career with a 33rd place finish in a season best time of 19:59.41 on the same week she was named Randolph County Athlete of the Week.

Sophomore Gabby Beckham was 123rd with a season best time of 21:41.54 and sophomore Hannah Bolton also had a season best time of 21:48.47 to finish 129th.

Junior Adriahn Hindsley was 174th in 25:21.80, sophomore Saij Sampley was 175th in 25:45.15, freshman Emma Formanek was 177th in 26:26.06, and junior Madyson Davison was 180th in 27:44.66.

DeKalb senior Tyler Schwartz won the race in 18:05.37.

Carroll (Ft Wayne) won the team title with 77 points, easily outdistancing Penn wit 131 points. Others advancing were Fort Wayne Dwenger 161, Fort Wayne Concordia 162, Homestead 175, and Northridge 183.

Rounding out the twenty semi-state teams were East Noble 186, Oak Hill 201, Mishawaka 218, Yorktown 249, Huntington North 269, Norwell 292, South Bend Adams 350,  Fort Wayne Luers 351, Concord 367, South Adams 380, Pendleton Heights 407, Monroe Central 484, Delta 499, and Mt. Vernon 568.

Other schools represented were Adams Central Angola, Bellmont, Blackford, Columbia City, DeKalb, Elkhart Central  Elkhart Memorial, Elwood, Fairfield, Frankton, Fremont, FW North, FW South, Glenn, Jay County, Lapel, Mississinewa, Northfield, NorthWood, Randolph Southern, Shenandoah, Southern Wells, Southwood, Union City, Wawasee, West Noble, Westview, Winchester, Woodlan, South Bend Ripley.
