Multiple Teams · 4th ranked Bears host Gophers at 7:30 p.m. Friday


Round two is Friday as 4th ranked Monroe Central attempts to make a trip to the sectional finals for the 3rd year in a row. The Golden Bears (9-1) will host the Clinton Prairie Gophers (5-5) Friday night at 7:30 p.m. for the right to play for the Class A Sectional 44 title.

MC is coming off a 57-6 win over winless Clinton Central, while the Gophers defeated winless APA, 74-20.

The Gophers are led by 6′ 3, 185 pound senior Collin Stroup, who does a little of everything – quarterback, punter, kicker, and leads the team in interceptions on defense. Behind center he is 139-of-250 passing for 1,976 yards, 20 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

Senior running back Sam Schoonveld, 6′ 1 and 205, has rushed 285 times for 1,793 yards and 25 touchdowns. He has rushed for 100+ yards in all 9 games.

Leading the receiving corps is 6′ 1, 190 pound sophomore Jacob Fullerton with 62 catches for 767 yards and 6 touchdowns. Junior Max nail at 6’1, 170 pounds had 26 catches for 458 yards and 5 scores and senior Michael Royer at 6′ 2, 180 comes in with 20 catches for 424 yards and 7 scores.

Defensively sophomore Coltyn Vandergriff, at 5′ 10, 180 pounds, leads the Gophers with 88 tackles. Senior Mitchell Coapstick, at 6′ 5, 230 pounds, had 63 tackles with 4 sacks and 3 fumble recoveries. Senior Jacob Simon, 6′ and 220 pounds, has 54 tackles.

Senior QB Casey Conatser leads the Bears completing of 83-of-147 pass attempts for 1,834 yards, 24 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

Senior Wyatt Snyder leads five backs with 100 yards or more as he has 767 yards and 14 TDs on 75 carries. Junior Seth Wilson has 73 carries for 572 yards and 3 scores, senior Keegan Kane has 38 carries for 358 yards and 4 scores, and junior Kamron Caldwell has 22 carries for 241 yards and 5 scores.

Senior Nick Mitchell has 24 catches for 554 yards and 8 scores, Caldwell had 14 receptions for 365 yards and 6 scores, and senior Israel Nash has 14 catches for 342 yards and two scores. Wilson also has 6 TD receptions.

Leading the defense which has recorded 5 shutouts this season are Wilson with 83 tackles and 3 forced fumbles, junior Kaden Conklin with 75 tackles, and junior Taft Manship with 70 tackles. Sophomores Logan Swallow and Sam Feola lead the team with 3 sacks apiece, junior Matt Poole has 3 interceptions, and Manship 4 fumble recoveries.

These two teams have met in the past with the Gophers winning in 2010 52-7 and again on September 30, 2011 28-20. Friday at 7:30 p.m. the Bears will have their chance to beat the Gophers for the first time and make yet another trip to the sectional title game.
