Multiple Teams · 4th ranked Lady Bears roll in season opener, 73-23


When you go 24-3, reach the regional final, and do not lose a single player from a year ago, what do you do? You open the season with a 50-point win.

Tuesday night the 4th ranked Lady Bears opened the season and conference play with a 73-23 win over a young Cowan team. \

Coach Leigh Ann Barga rotated 12 players most of the night after building a 21-3 first quarter lead.

MC led 41-9 at the half and extended the advantage to 60-18 by the 3rd quarter break, and then finished it off with a 50-point margin.

The Lady Bears quick-paced offense and pressure defense was in mid-season form during portions of the game. They forced Cowan into 30 turnovers, 20 in the first half. They held the Blackhawks to 6-of-39 (15 percent) shooting from the field and won the battle of the boards, 43-19. Cowan was 11-of-20 from the foul line to account for nearly half of their points.

MC shot 53 percent from the field (28-of-53), but struggled behind the arc hitting only 2-of-11 (18 percent) and at the foul line making 15-of-33 (45 percent). The Lady Bears recorded 23 steals and 16 assists in the win.

Senior Abigail McGrath had 7 first quarter points and finished 15 to now stand at 938 career points. She was 6-of-6 from the field and led MC with 8 rebounds while also dishing out 3 assists, getting 2 steals and blocking a shot.

Sophomore Hannah Bolton was 7-of-11 from the field for a team-high 17 points, with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Junior Jordyn Barga was 4-of-6 from the field and finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.

Senior Marissa Huddleston was on high gear with 8 points, 3 rebounds, 6 steals, and a pair of assists. Senior Kinzie Williams had 4 points and 3 boards; senior Bailey Duncan finished with 3 points and 3 steals; sophomore Katie Pike had 3 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals; and sophomore Brooke Bolton had 3 points.

Senior Faith Cope had 2 points and 4 rebounds; sophomore Mabrey Buis had 2 points and 2 rebounds; sophomore Hannah McCollum had 2 points and 4 rebounds; and sophomore Gabby Beckham had 3 rebounds.

The Lady Bears have depth and are fun to watch – they can play!

MC’s next game will be Tuesday, November 14 on the road against MEC foe Wes-Del.
