Multiple Teams · It’s a shot at the Final 4: Southwood @ Monroe Central Friday night

So it’s here! Football in November at Monroe Central. Will it be cold – heck yeah it will be, it’s November. But we’re still playing football and 2 weeks away from playing indoors!

4th ranked Monroe Central will host their first ever regional football game Friday night against 12th ranked Southwood at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 whether you buy them early or get them at the gate on game night. When fans arrive there will be at least one place to go to get in if you have purchased pre-sale tickets.

It will be something different for the Bears Friday night as Southwood is a pass-first football team, obvious as the Knights bring in the top passer and top two receivers in Class A football in the state. The Knights put it in the air and average of 28 times a game, average 311 yards a game in the air and have scored 55 TD’s airing it out.

So let’s look inside the Knights . . .

Senior QB Carson Blair, 6′ , 185 lbs, has completed 197 of 305 pass attempts for 55 touchdowns and only 3 picks. He has also rushed 92 times for 531 yards and 6 scores. The Class A leader in receiving is senior Peyton Trexler at 6-foot, 180 pounds. Trexler has caught 69 passes for 1768 yards and 32 scores. He is averaging 25.6 yards per catch. Blair has thrown to senior Matthew Nose (6′ 3) 72 times for 1239 yards (2nd best in Class A) and 18 TD’s.

The Knights leading rusher is sophomore Gabe Lloyd, 5′ 9, 158 pounds, with 184 carries for 1078 yards and 14 scores.

Defensively, freshman Elijah Sutton leads Southwood with 90 tackles, while junior Cameron Ball has 77, Nose has 74 and senior Brandt Crabtree has 74. Sophomore Dillon Flip leads Southwood with 6 sacks, and B lair has 8 interceptions.

The Knights have 13 interceptions on defense and have recovered 13 fumbles this year to be a +13 on turnovers. The punter averages 32.4 yards a kick. The Knights boast a good kicker as they have successfully kicked 95 PAT’s and 7-of-9 field goals with his longest 39 yards – which means if the Knights reach the 22 yards line – he’s in range.

Southwood has only a pair of 2-point conversions for the season compared to the Bears 60. MC has kicked 10-of-19 PAT’s successfully.

Southwood has also returned 2 kickoffs for scores this season.

The Bears are a plus 22 on the turnover front. It will be a battle to remember as the Knights have the top ranked offense in Class A getting 50.8 points a game (5th in the whole state) versus the Bears defense which is 2nd in Class A allowing only 8.8 points a game (6th overall in the state).

Senior QB Casey Conatser is the Bears general on the field and has completed 104-of-179 passes for 2125 yards, 27 touchdowns and 5 picks.

The rushing leaders are senior Wyatt Snyder with 905 yards and 16 scores on 97 carries; junior Seth Wilson 100 carries for 778 and 7 scores; senior Keegan Kane 383 yards and 4 TD’s on 43 carries; junior Kamron Caldwell 239 yards and 5 TD’s on 23 carries; and senior Israel Nash with 234 yards and 4 TD’s on 24 carries.

Senior Nick Mitchell leads the receiving corps with 655 yards on 29 catches and 8 scores. Caldwell has 427 yards and 7 TD’s on 16 catches; Wilson 344 yards and 6 scores on 17 catches; Snyder 245 yards and 3 TD’s on 19 receptions; and Nash 358 yards and 2 scores on 17 catches.

Wilson leads the defense with 105 tackles, junior Kaden Conklin has 96 tackles with 10.5 for loss, Taft Manship has 89 tackles, Kane has 62 tackles, and senior Kobe Brown has 59 tackles and leads the team with 3 sacks along with sophomores Logan Swallow and Sam Feola. Five MC players have multiple interceptions with Nash leading the way with 4 and junior Matt Poole with 3. 12 different players have recovered fumbles with Manship leading with 4 and Brown and Swallow with 2 apiece.

So now we know what everything looks like on paper – throw it out. This is high school football in November and players have to step up. Adrenalin will be in control early but when the dust settles who will move on to the Final Four and play at either Pioneer or LaVille next week?

I believe “It’s Our Time.”

Cold or not – this is history in the making. We had one first last week – let’s do it again!
