Israel Nash, a member of the 4th ranked sectional champion Monroe Central football team, has been named the Randolph County “Athlete of the Week” sponsored by WZZY/Star 98.3FM in Winchester and the Wetzel Auto Group.
The 4th ranked Bears scored 26 unanswered points last Friday in winning their first sectional title ever over 9-time state champion Sheridan, 26-7.
Trailing 7-0, MC put a drive together which ended with Nash punched it in from one yard out with 2:35 left in the first quarter.
Up 14-7 and Sheridan inside the Bears 15, Nash may have made the play of the game recovering a fumble to protect the lead at the half and give MC much needed momentum.
After taking the 2nd half kickoff, Nash broke loose for a 50 yard run down to the Sheridan 26. that set up a 4th down 20 yard TD pass that put MC up 20-7.
In the 4th quarter, a last hope for Sheridan was snuffed out when Nash intercepted a pass.
The ground game produced 225 yards led by Nash with 83 yards on 12 carries. Nash also had a reception for 6 yards and a big first down.
