The Monroe Central Golden Bear football team has made history two weeks in a row and hopes to add another chapter Friday.
Wednesday afternoon the announcement came that the Golden Bears football team had been named Randolph County Team of the Season sponsored by WZZY/Star 98.3FM in Winchester and the Wetzel Auto Group.
The 4th ranked Bears have a record 12 wins (12-1 overall), along with collecting the school’s first ever sectional and regional titles.
With one of the top defenses in the state for the 2nd year in a row, MC posted an 8-1 regular season record winning 18 straight regular season games before falling in the season finale to ranked 2A Shenandoah.
The 2017 version of the Bears has produced the 6th ranked offense in Class A and the 3rd best defense and 3rd best winning margin in Class A. The defense finished 9th in the entire state.
The 8 seniors have helped MC to their first ever sectional title over 9-time state champion Sheridan and to its first ever regional title over Southwood on the last play from scrimmage. The Knights came in getting 50 points a game and the Bear defense held them to 14.
MC will now play in the Final 4 against the #1 ranked team in Class A the Pioneer Panthers.
Over the last 3 years, coach John Hochstetler has led the Bears to a 32-5 record.
Congratulations to the Bears!
