It went three matches and overtime Saturday but after a 32 year wait, what was a few minutes more.
Monroe Central, Winchester, and Union City ended up in a 3-way tie Saturday in the Randolph County wrestling tournament. With no bi-law addressing a three-way tie, school representatives put their heads together and started counting total wins on the day for each school as the tie-breaker. When the dust settled, the Bears won their first title since 1986.
Since the Bears won in 1986, Winchester had dominated with Union City winning three titles and the Falcons the other 29.
The Bears opened the day with a 47-22 win over Winchester. MC then easily won over Randolph Southern, 62-3 but came up just short of a sweep with a 42-36 loss to Union City,
Union City maintained control of the travelling trophy the County Pin but the Bears won the County Trophy.
The Bears had five champions on the day in sophomore Jordan Willen at 126 pounds (3-0), freshman RJ Heskett at 132 pounds (3-0), junior Kamron Caldwell at 170 pounds (3-0), senior Kobe Brown at 220 pounds (3-0), and sophomore Logan Swallow at 285 pounds (3-0).
Taking runner-up finishes were sophomore Calvin King at 113 pounds (2-1), sophomore Walker Tinsman at 120 pounds (2-1), senior Griffin Heckman at 138 pounds (2-1), senior Hunter Tinsman at 145 pounds (2-1), junior Juian Franklin at 160 pounds (2-1), and freshman K=Jacob Keith at 182 pounds (1-2).
Tyler Jones settled for 3rd place with a 1-1 record at 152 pounds but dealt with a heath issues and was unable to finish the day.
