Boys 8th Grade Basketball · 8th grade Bears claim County title, now 22-0; 7th grade falls for 1st time


Last Saturday the Monroe Central Jr High boys basketball program participated in the Randolph County Tournament.

Monroe Central’s 8th grade continued their storybook season winning the County title and improving to 22-0.

In the semi-final game, the 8th grade Bears beat Winchester 44-33.
Leading scorers were Jackson Ullom and Reggie Gross both with 11 and Joel Kennedy added 8.
“It was a combined team effort on defense and rebounding on both ends that made the difference in this win,” said Coach
 In the championship game, the 8th grade Bears defeated Union City 60-27.
Leading scorers were Gavin Smithson and Reggie Gross both with 15 points each. Carter Abshear added 10.
“Another combined effort contributed to the championship win that saw nine players in the scoring column,” said Braun. “Team defense kept Union City in single digits in each quarter with one quarter only allowing three points scored.
“Congratulations to the Bears that kept the undefeated season going with one final game to play.”
The 7th grade Jr High boys basketball team was defeated in the first game of the Randolph County Tournament by Driver after battling injury, illness and foul trouble.
“They fought through a tough game with Winchester but fell short,” said Coach Braun.
The Bears lost to Driver, 43-35 with Luke Jones scoring 17 points.
Monroe Central won the consolation game over Union 68-5 with Carson Thompson leading the way with 14 points.  The 7th grade Bears are now 21-1.
In a game earlier in the week MC beat Randolph Southern,60-19, with Jones getting 21.
The Bears end the year today at West Jay.
