Third ranked Monroe Central started the 2nd season Tuesday night and advanced to the Frankton Sectional semi-finals with a 61-43 win over neighbor and MEC foe Wapahani.
It was a perfect example of why defense is so important and why it is said ‘defense wins championships.’ The Lady Bear offense struggled early hitting only 1-of-12 to start the game. MC did not score until 4:48 left in the first quarter and did not hit a field goal until the 3:50 mark. Meanwhile they forced Wapahani into numerous turnovers and did not allow the Raiders a field goal until 1:55 in the first.
The Lady Bears led after one quarter 5-3.
Once the offense started going, however, it produced a 22 point 2nd quarter and a 27-18 halftime lead. That surge carried into the 3rd quarter where the Lady Bears put up 20 points and extended their lead to 47-32 heading into the 4th.
The defense forced Wapahani into 20 turnovers, and only 15-of-38 shooting from the field.
The Lady Bears were 13-of-19 from the field in the 2nd half and had a great night at the line hitting 15-of-20 attempts.
Jordyn Barga led the Lady Bears, who are now 24-0, with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Hannah Bolton finished with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists. Abigail McGrath had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists and a pair of blocks.
Kinzie Williams finished with 6 points and 3 assists. Marissa Huddleston had 4 points and 4 rebounds, Bailey Duncan scored 3 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, and Katie Pike had 2 points and 2 assists.
The Lady Bears will now face Sheridan in the 7:30 p.m. semi-final game on Friday. The first game at Frankton will pit Frankton against Elwood at 6 p.m.
