For three quarters Friday night it was primarily about the defense in a conference game between neighboring schools Monroe Central and Wapahani. The Raiders were able to fend off the Bears late in the game for a second year in a row to win 58-53.

A year ago the Raiders held on for a 3-point win in a 4th quarter flurry.

Wapahani led after one quarter 13-10 and extended that lead to 28-22 by halftime.

The Bears scored the first 7 points of the second half to take a 29-28 lead, but Wapahani came back to be on top after three quarters, 35-34.

After neither team scored more than 15 points in a quarter, Wapahani rebounded from a 7-point 3rd quarter to put up 23 in the 4th while the Bears scored 19. The Raiders connected on 17 of 20 free throws in the quarter to edge past the Bears.

Peyton West led the Raiders with 31 including 9-of-10 free throws in the 4th. The Raiders hit 87% at the free throw line connecting on 27-of-31 attempts.

The Bears were led by Israel Nash with 29 points. Nash picked up 2 fouls in less than 3 minutes to open the game and spent the rest of the first quarter and part of the 2nd on the bench. He finished strong with 9 points in each the 2nd and 3rd quarters and 10 in the fourth.

Casey Conatser finished with 9 points, Will Jones scored 6, Logan Patterson dropped in 4 Wyatt Snyder netted 3, and adding 2 was Nick Mitchell.

The Bears hit 75% from the foul line, connecting on 12-of-16 attempts.

In the junior varsity game, the JV Bears had trouble getting the offense going. After scoring only two in the 3rd quarter, Monroe Central fell 40-28 to the Raiders.

Wapahani jumped out to a quick lead and posted a 14-7 advantage after the first quarter. MC cut into the lead but trailed 19-15 at the half.

Wapahani outscored MC 7-2 in the 3rd quarter and rode a 14-point 4th quarter to the win.

Evan Rausch led Wapahani with 22 points.

 

 

 

Sam Feola led MC with 12 points, while Caden Shumaker and Roman Braun with 5 points each. Scoring 2 points each were Landan Patterson Noel Childress, and Dustin Wright.

Monroe Central will host Cowan on Senior Night next Friday.
