Alexandria had 2 big hits Monday night and the defending sectional champions eliminated Monroe Central from the post-season, 9-2. The two big hits were home runs that accounted for 7 runs in the Class 2A Lapel Sectional opener.
The Lady Tigers scored 5 times in the 2nd inning with a grand slam being the big hit.
The Lady Bears got on the board in the 5th as Maggie Ridge singled and came around to score on a bunt by Laura Stoops and an error. It was Stoops 2nd time reaching base on a bunt in the game.
Jordyn Barga was line drived in the shin in the 4th inning as she worked in the circle. She toughed it out and finished the inning and tried to start the 5th before giving way to Faith Cope.
The Lady Tigers extended their lead to 9-1 with a 2-out 3-run home run in the 5th. Monroe Central then scored in the 6th as Barga doubled and Cope drove her in with a single up the middle.
Alexandria had 6 hits in the game, two long balls and several seeing-eye hits. MC pitchers struck out 8 Alexandria hitters on the night.
At the plate for MC, Barga doubled, Cope singled, Stoops had a pair of bunts, while Maggie Ridge also got in the hit column. MC only struck out twice but did not catch a break. The Lady Bears hit some rockets during the night – but they were right at the infielders and outfielders. MC only struck out twice in the game.
Alexandria (20-10) moves on to play Shenandoah in the sectional semi-finals. It was the 2nd year in a row that Alex defeated MC in the sectional (14-1 a year ago).
Monroe Central had several seniors on the team – Maggie Ridge, Samantha Roderick, Faith Cope, Cassi Buis, and Laura Stoops.
