Nick Mitchell finished a historic track career Saturday at Indiana University in the IHSAA State Championships by placing 22nd in the 110 m Hurdles.
Coach Preston Proctor said, “Nick made a good comeback at the line. Getting here was a compliment to one of Monroe Central’s greatest track & field athletes. It was a honor to be his coach.”
Mitchell had an outstanding senior season to cap a career to remember.
The last few weeks of success for Mitchell started at the MEC meet hosted by MC.
“The boys had a historic effort turned in by senior Nick Mitchell,” said Coach Preston Proctor.
In the 110 High Hurdles Mitchell broke the MEC record in the prelims and then re-broke the MEC record in the finals and broke the school record with a time of 14.72. The school record broken was set in 1994.
Mitchell also won the 300 m hurdles with a time of 40.66 which broke the MEC record set in 2004. He also anchored the champion 4 x 100 Relay team and was also the third leg of the champion 4 x 400 Relay team. In that relay Mitchell ran a pr split of 51.9.
In the Sectional at Muncie Central, Mitchell broke his own school records in successfully defending his Sectional Championships in the 110 and 300 Hurdles. In the 110 Hurdles he won by over a second with a time of 14.44. In the 300 he won with a time of 39.68 in another school record time.
Mitchell became the only Monroe Central Track athlete in school history to have won 5 sectional championships winning the 110 and 300 hurdles in back-to-back seasons.
At the North Central IHSAA Track Regional, Mitchell finished 4th in the 110 M Hurdles in 14.76 and his time earned him a trip to the State Finals.
In Indoor track in March, Mitchell broke his own school record (8.80) in the 60 m Hurdles with a preliminary time of 8.74, March 24 in the Indoor Hoosier State State Championship held at Indiana University.
In the finals of the 60 m Hurdles, Mitchell placed 7th in the state with a time of 8.78.
